All landowners and hunting clubs participating in the Louisiana DMAP (Deer Management Assistance Program)must be posted with orange DMAP signs next season. The law (Title 56:111.1) was added in 1990 to assist with intensive deer herd management by prohibiting unauthorized persons from taking game on DMAP lands. In the past, posting with DMAP signs was not mandatory. However, for the 2000-2001 hunting seasons, posting the signs in accordance with the law will be mandatory. The primary component of the rule reads as follows: "No person shall knowingly take, attempt to take, disturb, or destroy any wild bird or wild quadruped or the nest, egg or young thereof on lands designated as Deer Management Assistance Program areas, or shall have in his possession or keep, while on the lands, any firearm, trap, snare, or other device capable of being used in the taking or disturbance of the birds or quadrupeds on such areas, unless the person has been expressly authorized by a permit from the owner, lessee, lessor, or hunting club or organization authorized to hunt on the land to do so and then only for the purpose and under the conditions specified in the permit." In addition, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission will consider, and is expected to approve the mandatory DMAP posting regulation at its regular April 2000 meeting. Originally, DMAP signs had to be placed every 200 feet along the entire boundary for it to be legally DMAP posted. Under the proposed rule, the distance between signs would be increased to 1000 feet. This significantly reduces the cost to the DMAP cooperator since the number of signs required to post one mile of boundary would be reduced from 26 to only 5. Signs must also be posted at every entrance to the property. Signs must be made to the LDWF specifications: Material - metal, wood, plastic, paper or other material Color - Orange Size - 11-1/4" x 11-1/4" Lettering - The words DMAP and POSTED can be no less than four inches in height.
